2022 Year-end Summary

It's already February!

This year's year-end summary is late because I got sick at the end of last year and spent the Lunar New Year doing nothing but playing games. However, "Pioneers: Wrath of Justice" is quite fun, a kind of single-player substitute for running a team.

Self-hosting#

Return#

In 2022, the keyword for me was definitely "self-hosting". I set up some commonly used services myself and put a lot of effort into them (although a lot of effort ended up not being used much). Although I had tinkered with some things on them in the past few years, it feels very different this time, facing the whole Internet, making me feel the feeling of the Internet that was vividly described in textbooks in the early 2000s, the treasure trove of all humanity... and connecting with people in the farthest corners of the world...

When I was a child, my mother introduced me to the Internet through a company. The first website I opened seems to be a small game website, I was so young! I don't even remember the emotions at that time, was it excitement? Happiness? Or more interested in the mouse ball? And then, because there was no way to take care of me, I started boarding school in first grade. There was no arrangement for boarding school at this age, it was all taken care of by the dormitory aunt. But I seemed to enjoy it, maybe I'm the kind of person who can play with myself.

At that time, besides playing in the sandbox, I could only read books. Maybe it was the books at that time that deeply influenced me. The imagination of the Internet in the books combined with the experience of dipping my toes in the water created an unrealistic fantasy about the Internet for me. Unfortunately, the Internet has now become a tool that is seen as good or bad by everyone, like walking in an endless wilderness.

I didn't expect that twenty years later, the feeling of the early Internet would come back. Maybe the Internet is like the fashion industry, returning every twenty years.

Like Water#

The advantage of self-hosting is that the data is in your own hands, of course, the actual situation still needs to be questioned, even exclamation marks. Because self-hosting faces too many problems, and just one "big failure" can extinguish it. But who can blame this sense of freedom for being so delightful? Let's have some fun before the inevitable "big failure" comes.

Emacs#

Of course, there is one more thing, which is finding a "toy" that can be tinkered with for a long time, Emacs. There's nothing much to say about it because 80% of my blog this year is about it. Of course, many times it's just a false liking, and I haven't really delved into many things, but it doesn't matter, it's there, until I can't stand its flaws anymore, I should be able to play with it for a few more years.

Veil#

Strictly speaking, not many of the goals and prospects set last year have been achieved, such as taking care of my health, facing "reality," honing my skills, etc. But looking back, staring at the veil on the statue, it still danced a bit. The world is still hazy, but I have been staring at the lake under the moonlight, even if I can't reach the arrival of dawn, it's not bad at this moment. But as the world finally returns to normal, this year I still need to be a little more "normal," at least strive for one goal.

2022 was a lost year for me, just like the "lost decade" (in terms of climate change). People lost hope while arguing and complaining that nothing had been accomplished in ten years, and the end of the world had come. But looking back, the world was not destroyed. In the chaos, some hopes are developing.

There was no destruction, but the problems still exist. But as the tide of despair recedes and I stand on the "normal" ground... maybe when I look back at the scene a few years later, I will slap my forehead and think, "Ah, the water level was so high back then?"
